The latest Reuters Top 75 ranking: Asia Pacific’s Most Innovative Universities has recognized the institution as Australia's Most Innovative University. The campus of the university in Malaysia is also a center of innovation, actively working with the local community and the entire region of Southeast Asia.

“For me, the real innovation of this campus is collaboration,” said Professor Andrew Walker, President and Vice-Chancellor of Monash University in Malaysia.


“Interaction is the key to everything we do. The excellent location of our Klang Valley campus allows us to actively interact with various companies and develop a research plan that is in line with the industrial challenges of modern Malaysia. ”


A significant proportion of the university’s interaction with the professional industry is in the research partnership, which is of great social importance. Examples of such partnerships include, in particular, the recent issuance of sustainable development grants aimed at improving the ecology of Sunway City, where the university is located.


Innovative projects for the future

Currently, the Monash Malaysia Community Grant Scheme grant system is working on five projects aimed at using university research to improve urban sustainable development. For example, work is underway on a project of a Sustainable Intelligent Transport Ecosystem that will use adaptive technologies to meet the transport needs of the city. Also on the Rivers of Sustainable Development project, Sunway City, which aims to conserve and manage the water channel passing through the city.


“Sustainable development grants summarize everything that we are trying to do,” said Professor Walker. “We conduct world-class research in collaboration with a large corporation and contribute to the local community that we strive to interact with.”


Innovative Learning Techniques in Malaysia

Monash University in Malaysia also invests in educational innovations that allow students to be active participants in the learning process. The work of the university campus, which recently received the SETARA 6-star rating for outstanding teaching and learning, is geared toward student needs.


The days when one teacher taught students, standing in front of the rows of desks, will soon be a thing of the past, because the campus is gradually introducing innovative teaching methods. As Professor Walker noted, in the future the university will focus not so much on teaching as on teaching. In the classroom, students will be given every opportunity to develop the critical and intercultural skills necessary for an easier transition from school to work.


Recently, Monash University climbed to a new 59th place in the international ranking of universities QS World University Rankings 2019, and the university campus in Malaysia uses this momentum for further innovative work in the region. Professor Walker sees the improvement of the university’s position as an opportunity to apply the research experience of Monash in action.


“The ranking included us among the best research universities in the world,” said the professor. “My vision is that it is Monash University in Malaysia that will form the research platform in Southeast Asia. Huge new research opportunities for Monash can be created through collaboration with the professional industry, government, and civil society. For example, our research engineers are working on smart manufacturing to help Malaysian industry match the potential of the fourth industrial revolution. For me, this is a recipe for meaningful interaction and innovation. ”


The university campus in Malaysia is not going to stop on the achieved innovative progress. While the campus is celebrating its twentieth birthday, Professor Walker notes that university history of innovation is rooted in the founding of the institution in 1998.


“We were born from innovation,” the professor says. “Twenty years ago, Monash University took a bold step by opening a full-fledged campus in Asia. We are still the only research university in Australia with a campus in the region. That is why an innovative approach is embedded in our DNA. ”
