Shocking report on the extent of violence in British universities
Events at Cambridge University took place against the background of another important news, also related to the problem of violence among students of British universities.
On June 20, the NUS published a report on cases of sexual abuse at UK universities. To compile a report, a study and a survey of 544 students, mainly girls, from various British universities were conducted.
The survey results were truly shocking: every seventh respondent admitted that during his studies he had at least once been a victim of harassment or had unwanted sexual contact! In addition, 3 out of 10 students said they were under pressure to establish an unwanted romantic or sexual relationship, and every third case of sexual harassment occurs on university campuses.
It is also puzzling that only 14% of students who have experienced any form of unwanted sexual behavior have reported this to the competent authorities. As the students themselves said, the fear of public opinion and fears due to possible revenge on the part of the offender most often interfere with their application. The most difficult to apply for violence are students of non-traditional sexual orientation.
Experts have already noted that in this way a tendency to normalize unhealthy sexual behavior among students is realized. That is why British universities, like universities around the world, are now paying increasing attention to safety measures on campuses. Their main goal is not only the investigation of cases of sexual violence and punishment of rapists, but also the active prevention of sexual crimes.
How do universities help students in distress?
Most modern foreign universities support students if they become victims of crimes of any kind. For this, universities have special support services. Among them are confidential psychological and religious assistance services, harassment counseling services, problem and controversial situations, as well as special support services for foreign students. In addition, many campus universities have their own security departments and maintain a high level of security.
The mere fact of episodes of harassment and sexual abuse in individual foreign universities does not mean that studying abroad is unsafe. Also, for this reason, do not refuse to study abroad in England, because many foreign students are happy to live and study in this country. It’s more important to take note of alarming statistics and constantly remember personal security measures, no matter what country you are in. It is also worth noting that the UK, like other European countries, is in the top 50 of the safest countries in the world, while Russia occupies only 154th place in this rating.
We at Hotcourses.ru recommend students who are victims of harassment and sexual abuse at the university to immediately apply to the competent authorities at the place of study. If a crime is committed, your application can be accepted by both the component department of the educational institution and the local police department.
