Duration of study in Singapoure
Duration of study
The timing of a completed higher education program in Singapore varies by degree. The term of study for a bachelor's degree is 3-4 years, for a master's degree 1-3 years and for a doctor's degree 2-5 years. A year of study at national universities in Singapore will cost a foreigner from 4,000 to 12,000 US dollars, and living expenses will be about 500 US dollars per month. Students also have the opportunity to receive a scholarship.
The requirements for admission are also different, depending on the degree, faculty and the chosen specialty. A prerequisite is knowledge of English. For bachelors, this is IELTS - 6.0, TOEFL - 550 (or 213 for CBT).
This is followed by testing of SAT 1 and SAT 2 (for admission to the National University of Singapore). By SAT 1: a minimum of 600 points in reading, spelling, and 650 in math. The requirements for SAT 2 in each university are different.
Admission through "polytechnics"
As one of the options, upon completion of nine classes, the applicant has every chance of entering the Singaporean state vocational-technical institutes, called polytechnics. They differ from universities in the following parameters.
Firstly, the main direction of their activity is training in engineering specialties. Secondly, the vast majority of degrees awarded by them are limited to the level of the bachelor. Thirdly, they, as a rule, are not engaged in research work. Fourth, they are significantly smaller than universities in terms of the number of students and teachers.
For admission to the polytechnic, only a school certificate is required. There are five such polytechnics in Singapore:
- Singapore Polytechnik
- Temasek Polytechnik
- Nanyang polytechnik
- Ngee Ann Polytechnik
- Republik Polytechnik
Application times vary from country to country. Admission to them goes in several stages, and the set lasts only five days.
First of all, you need to register on the site and send your documents in English by e-mail. Then you should send certified copies by mail within three days.
As soon as an applicant is selected by the college, he is invited to take exams and interviews. To come to Singapore at this stage, you need a tourist visa. You must have the original documents with notarized copies with you.
Admission through "About level"
There is also a variant of training courses for passing the Singapore state exam to obtain an “About level”. The cost of these courses is about 10,000 Singapore dollars per year. Hiring a tutor to prepare for exams will cost you approximately 90 local dollars per hour.
Private colleges
Things are slightly different with admission to private colleges in Singapore.
ICAS Training And Education College (ICASTEC) is undoubtedly one of the best private colleges in Singapore. ICASTEC College was founded in 2005 and now works in close partnership with the government of Singapore. Personnel are trained here for many state programs. ICASTEC students practice in large hotels and restaurants in Singapore, which provides them with further employment immediately after graduation.
All ICASTEC programs involve a six-month student pay practice.
Diploma level is available immediately after graduation. You can continue studying at the Advanced Diploma level both in Singapore and at the bachelor's degree in England at any of ICASTEC partner universities: University of Portsmouth (UK) or University of Wales (UK).
If you decide to pause your studies, this will not in any way jeopardize your future plans. At this stage, you can already easily find a job and continue training later. With Diploma in their hands, graduates are able to provide for themselves, and if they wish, save money for further education.
