Legal Education at Singapore University of Management

A law school within the University of Singapore Management (SMU) was opened relatively recently, in 2007, due to a lack of qualified lawyers in the country. Despite its young age, the law faculty has already become one of the leading universities and one of the best in Singapore, ensuring the availability of quality legal education.
The school sets itself the goal of training modern teachers, researchers and practicing lawyers who perceive legal activity in an international context and are ready to work for the good of society.
Offering various training programs for local and foreign students, SMU Law School is primarily interested in attracting students who are looking to build a career in criminal law, international private and commercial law, constitutional and administrative law, evidence law, legal theory and philosophy , banking and financial law.

Bachelor of Laws (LLB)

At the undergraduate level, the school educates young lawyers with extensive interdisciplinary thinking and an active position.
This is achieved, firstly, through interactive teaching, built on discussions and communication, following the example of MBA programs. By the way, in addition to teachers, local and foreign practicing lawyers periodically teach and lecture at the university, ready to share their experience.
Secondly, an important role is played by a comprehensive training course, which covers the foundations of all branches of law, as well as related disciplines.
A standard study program lasts 4 years, involves 36 courses and leads to an LLB degree. It also includes compulsory 10-week work practice in Singapore or abroad and an 80-hour practice with the Voluntary Welfare Organization (VWO) or another legal advocacy organization.
A dual undergraduate program is also available, which leads to a degree in law and a degree in another discipline (economics, business, accounting, social sciences or information systems management). This program lasts 5 years and requires two internships.
Tuition for the year: S $ 41,000 (excluding grants and scholarships)

Unlike the standard LLM program, the dual program gives specialization not only in Asian, but also in European law. Students study international legal standards, as well as aspects of commercial and legal relations between East and West.
The double program is characterized by increased intensity and lasts 15 months. During the program, from July to December, students study at SMU Law School, and from January to September next year, they study at the Law School of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). In SMU, students study disciplines from the standard LLM program, and in QMUL - disciplines such as business ethics and finance, private banking law, regulation of financial markets, international patent law, etc. The learning process in London also includes writing a dissertation.
